Little Energy Bombs!!!

Rats are well known for their speed, agility and capacity for play. They need a good hour or two a day where they can just let off steam and roam around your house for a bit, jumping, chasing, climbing etc. However, I have seen rats fed a cooked diet where they also eat a fair bit of raw food and then they move over to an ALL raw diet and their energy levels soar within just a few days. Not only their energy levels increase but their coats condition improves and their eyes become very bright. I'm not saying you can't achieve this on a very healthy cooked diet but it's just what I've seen in my own experience with rats fed all raw, especially lazy bucks!

  1. At our sanctuary/rescue, we have open cages on banquet tables. The rats are never closed in. However, I have become concerned lately that it is still not enough space for them to run and jump. Occasionally, I've let some loose on the bathroom floor, but we rent and they chew! Any suggestions? We are also short on volunteers so don't always have time for supervised play.

  2. Hi Dawn, well it is tricky given the circumstance when you must have quite a lot of cages. I think if the cages themselves are roomy with lots of toys and especially wheels, it will help to encourage play. Other than that, anywhere you have the space for a good run, like the bathroom will give them a nice outing. Also, if you put out different toys, boxes etc so that they will explore those when they're out rather than chewing. Let me know how you get on.
